  • Duties included research, teaching, and administration. 

​

  • Main areas of research have been the theory and application of neural networks, computer vision, and the application of AI technique to engineering. 

​

  • Principal investigator in a project to model the early stages of processing in the mammalian visual system, based on neuroanatomy, neurophysiology, and theoretical analysis. The model is adaptive and has been very successful in modelling the development of many features of mammalian early visual processing, such as oriented receptive fields, orientation columns, ocular dominance stripes, and colour blobs.

  • Co-investigator in a project on optic constraints for action, modelling processing of image motion for navigation and action in an environment. 

​

  • Co-investigator in research to develop mobile robot sensory and control systems using genetic algorithms and real hardware. 

​

  • Co-investigator in a project to develop software tools for integrated symbolic and sub-symbolic modelling.

​

  • Another main area of research has been the application of AI, and particularly neural network, techniques in industry and commerce. Applications investigated have included mineral exploration using data in image format, weather forecasting using radar image sequences, x-ray interpretation, and mechanical design.

​

  • Taught a range of courses for the Bachelor's degrees in Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence and the Master's degree in Knowledge-Based Systems.

​

  • Supervised Master's and Doctorial research into a variety of basic and applied topics.

​

  • Administrative duties have included Subject Chair for Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence (1989-90), Chair of COGS M.Sc. Exam Board (1990-93), Academic Secretary for Computer Science (1990-91). Also, External Examiner for M.Sc. course, Department of Artificial Intelligence, University of Edinburgh (1991-95). Examiner for more than a dozen Doctoral dissertations.

  • Member of the CPCS selection Board for the Distinguished Dissertation in Computer Science (1991-95).

​

  • Consultant to Schlumberger Technologies. Consultant to Newmont Exploration Limited on applications of neural network technology to mineral exploration.

​

  • Member of the panel of Oxford Consultants.

​

  • Recipient of two unsolicited awards from the Stichting Fund for Science and Technology Research.

​
