About me

Picture 1_edited.png

I'm a retired AI and Computer Science researcher.

At the Department of Machine Intelligence, University of Edinburgh in the late 1970s I designed the digital electronics and computer interfacing for the Freddy I and Freddy II robots. I developed computer vision software for them.  I designed and personally wrote 50% of the "Versatile Assembly" demonstration code, and supervised development of another 40%.

At Stanford Research Institute AI Lab, I proposed the "Intrinsic Images" paradigm for computer vision.  I collaborated with Marty Tenenbaum in computer vision research, and we developed several novel techniques, such as interpretation-guided segmentation of images and map-guided interpretation of aerial images.
